The Salmon River Central School District Book of the Month program is an important component of building community. When a story is shared among classmates, friends, families and community members, it lends itself well to conversations about positive behaviors, appropriate social interactions and good citizenship.
The Book of the Month program encourages thoughtful discussions at any age level around universal values of caring and empathy. Other examples of featured traits are honesty, acceptance, perseverance, cooperation,
respect and self-discipline. Each title is chosen based on an important trait or lesson.
These conversation starters are a great way to use literacy as a building block for learning from others and their experiences. Connecting with characters and situations in a book fosters the sharing of stories and experiences across all ages!
Just by reading the story and having a conversation you can make a difference! Talking about the Book of the Month is one way to teach our children how to make good decisions and to care about themselves and their communities.
A conversation is easy when you have something in common to talk about! Enjoy the Book of the Month while you wait, and carry the story with you until that next conversation.
