To earn the Seal of Civic Readiness, students complete rigorous civic projects that require them to investigate real-world issues, analyze evidence, and develop solutions or recommendations that promote positive change.

Kalista Leaf and Grayci George focused their research on healthcare disparities affecting American Indian and Alaska Native communities through a partnership with Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. The pair traveled to Minnesota to present their work at the National American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) Conference before sharing their findings with the Salmon River school community. Kalista examined disparities in head and neck cancer outcomes among Indigenous populations, while Grayci explored how specialized patient navigators can help improve cancer care and reduce barriers to treatment.

Alex Redmond and Chyann Collins each completed in-depth policy papers addressing important societal issues. Alex’s research examined censorship and its impact on constitutional rights, exploring how restricting access to information can affect democratic freedoms. Chyann’s paper focused on gender inequality in healthcare, highlighting disparities women continue to face and advocating for equitable access to quality healthcare.

The New York State Seal of Civic Readiness recognizes students who have demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and civic mindset needed to become active and informed members of their communities. The designation signals to colleges, employers, and the public that recipients are prepared to engage thoughtfully in civic life and contribute to positive change.
