The Salmon River Central School District Board of Education has appointed Benjamin Barkley as the district’s next superintendent of schools.
Following a comprehensive search process that included multiple rounds of interviews and opportunities for stakeholder input, the board selected Barkley to lead the district into its next chapter. He will officially assume the role of superintendent on Sept. 1, after serving as interim superintendent since mid-March 2026.
Barkley brings more than 25 years of experience within the Salmon River Central School District. He has served as the district’s interim superintendent, overseeing all aspects of district operations, including academics, finance, personnel and facilities. Prior to assuming the interim role, Barkley spent several years as principal of Salmon River Elementary School and then as principal of Salmon River High School, while also serving as the district’s athletic administrator. Throughout his career, he has played a key role in advancing instructional programs and supporting student achievement.
“The Board of Education was looking for a leader who is committed to our students, values collaboration, and is focused on moving Salmon River forward,” said Board of Education President Jason Brockway. “Mr. Barkley has demonstrated steady leadership, strong character, and a deep understanding of our district. We are confident he will continue bringing people together as we build a positive future for our schools.”
Barkley said he is grateful for the opportunity to continue serving the district that has been his professional home for the past 25 years.“It is a tremendous honor to be selected as the next superintendent of Salmon River Central School District,” Barkley said. “This district and community have been such an important part of my life for the past 25 years, and I am grateful for the trust the Board of Education has placed in me. I look forward to listening, learning, and working alongside our students, staff, families, and community as we continue to provide meaningful opportunities for every child to succeed.”
Barkley earned a Master of Science in Educational Leadership and Supervision from Canisius College, a Master of Science in Teaching from SUNY Potsdam, and a Bachelor of Arts in Government from St. Lawrence University. He holds both School Building Leader and School District Leader certifications and recently completed the New York State Council of School Superintendents’ Superintendent Academy.
The superintendent search included interviews with the Board of Education and opportunities for faculty, staff, students, families and community members to meet the finalist candidates and provide feedback. The board expressed its appreciation to everyone who participated in the process and helped shape this important decision.
