A Little Bit About Us

The Teaching American History program supported a three-year project to improve teachers' knowledge, understanding and appreciation for American history through intensive, ongoing professional development. Project grantees were required to be in partnership with organizations that have extensive knowledge of American history, including libraries, museums, nonprofit history or humanities organizations, and higher education institutions.

The Salmon River School District is a small rural school district located in the northernmost reaches of New York State. Nestled in the foothills of the Adirondacks, on the shore of the Saint Lawrence, the district serves students from the towns of Fort Covington, Bombay, Brasher, Bangor and Westville as well as from the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation.

Three separate schools, the St. Regis Mohawk School, Salmon River Elementary and the Salmon River Secondary School serve a diverse population of students.

In 1998, the school district undertook a comprehensive school improvement effort and entered into a partnership with the National Center for Education and the Economy. Through this initiative, the district was able to focus its attention and resources on increasing student achievement. The district continues to address student achievement issues while maintaining rich student support services in the areas athletics, technology and fine arts
