Students hold up life-sized check worth $2,500 for scholarships

It may have been Salmon River High School’s first time competing in the local TV competition Whiz Quiz, but it sure didn’t look like it.

Altogether, the Whiz Quiz Shamrocks team competed against teams from five schools in the North Country.

The competition started off in October 2022. The Shamrocks first took on Immaculate Heart Central, followed by Ogdensburg Free Academy, Thousand Islands and Potsdam. The Shamrocks were victorious in each of these matchups.

While Sackets Harbor ended up winning the final round and was awarded the Glenn Gough Championship Trophy, the Salmon River students did not walk away empty handed.

Students Jeremy Francis, Ty David, Dorian Griffin, Ansley Hill, Gunner Mitchell and Riley Thomas were honored at a dinner held in Clayton, N.Y., on Wednesday, Jan. 18.

During the dinner, the Salmon River students were given plaques, a trophy and $2,500 combined in scholarships for earning second place in the competition. TV show host Joleene DesRosiers was there to present the awards.

Ben Davison, a global studies teacher at Salmon River High School, coached the team.

“We would like to thank Superintendent Dr. Stanley Harper and the Board of Education for supporting our first-ever Whiz Quiz team,” said Salmon River High School Principal Benjamin Barkley. “We are already looking forward to next year!”

Whiz Quiz is a quiz bowl-style tournament TV show produced by WPBS-TV, the PBS affiliate based in Watertown, N.Y. All episodes of the television program are available for viewing online.
