Program Coordinator
Akwesasne Cultural Center & Museum, Hogansburg

Biography

Sue  Ellen has been the Akwesasne Museum's program coordinator since 1995. Akwesasne is a Mohawk community located where New York State and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec intersect. Sue coordinates classes that help to pass Mohawk traditional arts to the next generation of artisans in the community of Akwesasne. Her work also entails oversight of the museum's collection, management of the museum shop and curating temporary exhibits. Giving tours and aiding visitors are also among her daily duties. The variety of responsibilities makes the job interesting. The enthusiasm of visitors is infectious and helps to keep things in perspective. Sue has a BFA from the Painting Department of the Rhode Island School of Design and is a high school graduate of the Institute of American Indian Arts. She exhibits her own artwork in Hotinonshonni group shows on a regular basis and hopes to find time someday to continue painting, basketry, fingerweaving, and sewing. As a mom with two toddlers, time is a bit scarce these days!
