Akwesasne Cultural Center Field Trip

Written by on October 11, 2017 Filed in District, District Announcements, SRMS, SRMS Announcements

7th grade ELA and social studies classes recently visited the Akwesasne Cultural Center in Hogansburg. Their first study unit revolves around the theme of culture. Students were given the Driving Question: “Who am I?” Throughout the unit, students have read the book, A Long Walk to Water, created their own culture based on geography and compared and contrasted cultures. NYS Standards ask students to focus on the Haudenosaunee, which is a great way to incorporate the rich culture we have in our school and community. On this trip, the objective was to explore local culture through history. While at the Akwesasne Cultural Center, students explored the museum and were able to partake in a question-driven presentation by the North American Traveling College.
